About us
A central network of learning for the Australian Public Service.
Welcome to the APS Academy
The APS Academy is a networked hub of learning and development; working with APS and industry partners to build the capability and performance of the APS workforce.
The APS Academy‘s role is to support the APS workforce in building the skills and knowledge which are unique and essential to working in the Australian public service. These skills and knowledge are what we call ‘public service craft’ capabilities.
Learn how the Academy supports you to build your public service craft capability by viewing our short video.
The APS Academy was established in July 2021 to support the APS workforce in building the skills and knowledge which are unique and essential to working in the Australian public service.
The APS Academy is a networked hub of learning and development; working with APS and industry partners to build the capability and performance of the APS workforce.
The Academy is available to all APS employees located across Australia and around the world. These skills and knowledge are what we call ‘public service craft’ capabilities.
These are the core capabilities that you take with you from role to role and use throughout your APS career. We offer a range of learning experiences designed to build APS Craft capability.
We embrace continuous learning, supporting you to learn little by little, day by day through work, people, resources and courses. Continuous learning enables you to build the capability you need to do your best work today, and achieve your longer term career goals.
On our website, you will find a range of resources, courses, events and networks.
We have courses to suit everyone’s needs.
These range from short elearning modules, half and full day face to face and virtual workshops, as well as longer term learning pathways.
Our toolkits include resources to help you on the job, such as guides, templates, articles, and access to experienced APS practitioners through networks and communities of practice.
You can join us online for regular events, such as panel discussions and masterclasses on contemporary and emerging issues for the APS. To find learning opportunities that suit you, please join us at APSAcademy.gov.au.
Here, you can sign up to the MyAcademy newsletter to get news of new learning experiences, articles and events at the APS Academy each month.
We look forward to working with you to build your public service craft capability, and inspire continual learning across the APS.

History
The 2019 Independent Review of the APS suggested that ‘[there] is little guidance of what is essential or core to being a great public servant’.
Recommendation number 20 of the APS Reform Agenda ‘Delivering for Australians’ proposes the development of an APS Learning and Development Strategy to deepen capability and expertise, of which a role for an APS Academy is now identified.
The subsequent review into existing central Commission led learning offerings (Review of the Centre for Leadership and Learning) identified the need to:
- Improve collaboration and engagement by the APSC with agencies on L&D directions and initiatives
- Strengthen partnerships and engage with agencies
- Develop and deliver initiatives to ensure a pro-integrity culture
- Lead the development of public service craft capabilities
- Support Professional Streams to implement specific development
- Expand evaluation support for agencies to assess the impact of learning initiatives.
The APS Academy was established in July 2021 as a division of the Australian Public Service Commission.
