By the Strategy and Planning Branch, Department of Defence
Across Government, the APS workforce is delivering projects with increasing levels of complexity, in support of policy initiatives, services to the Australian public and the acquisition and sustainment of major assets, systems and infrastructure. Greater levels and types of complexity are evident in these projects, including greater inter-agency collaboration, more diverse stakeholders, and competing requirements.

The Complex Project Management (CPM) Profession will focus on building the capability and capacity of the APS workforce while evaluating and navigating the various dimensions of project complexity. The Profession will establish a whole of APS employment lifecycle approach to attract, develop, retain and deploy APS workforce, progressively building and deploying the skills and experiences necessary to deliver projects of increasing complexity.
This will help the APS better define and execute clear project strategies through the management of cost, schedule, and scope, ultimately reducing risk and driving greater value for money, while considering the evolving elements of complexity.
In the few months since the CPM Profession has been stood up, the co-heads have been working together on what the profession needs to deliver in 2025 and how CPM fits in the larger project management profession. We look forward to sharing all this with you as 2025 progresses.
