By the APS Academy Capability, Partnerships and Strategy team
In the dynamic landscape of Learning and Development (L&D), the key to growth lies in collaboration, shared knowledge, and continuous learning. Within the Australian Public Service (APS), this ethos is embodied by the APS L&D Community of Practice (CoP), a vibrant hub where L&D practitioners come together to exchange insights, showcase best practices, and foster professional networks.
Established by passionate individuals within APS agencies, the APS L&D CoP is more than just a community—it's a movement driven by a collective zeal for enhancing learning outcomes across the APS spectrum. With over 900 dedicated members and a steady influx of fresh perspectives (184 new members joined in 2023 alone), the CoP represents a diverse array of experiences and expertise in the realm of L&D.
At the heart of the CoP is the commitment to practitioner-led learning and the promotion of a culture of continuous improvement. Members, many of whom boast over a decade of experience in the field, actively engage in various activities—from deep involvement in events to more passive participation—to glean insights, share successes, and collaborate on challenges.
One of the cornerstones of the APS L&D CoP is its robust support system provided by the APS Academy. Through digital asset maintenance, event coordination, and online moderation, the Academy ensures seamless operations and fosters an environment conducive to growth and collaboration. This support not only strengthens the CoP but also aligns with the broader objective of cultivating a system-wide culture of learning and high performance across the APS.
In 2024, the CoP continues to thrive with a variety of events and communication activities designed to facilitate networking, co-learning, and the showcasing of best practices. From face-to-face networking events, where agencies open their doors to showcase their work, to regular online meet-ups and informative newsletters, members have ample opportunities to connect, learn and contribute.
A hallmark of the APS L&D CoP is its practitioner-based approach, where individuals with a common passion for their professional practice come together to learn from each other's experiences and support one another's growth. Through specialised features in newsletters, captivating case studies, and peer-to-peer connections, members are empowered to explore new ideas, seek mentorship and rejuvenate their own L&D programs.
Crucially, the CoP serves as a safe space for members to engage, contribute, and experiment—a platform where ideas are nurtured, perspectives are broadened, and innovation thrives. Whether through a Gov Teams channels, newsletters or virtual meetings, members are encouraged to share their insights, reach a wider audience, and collectively elevate the standards of L&D within the APS.
As we look ahead, the APS L&D CoP remains steadfast in its mission to empower L&D practitioners, foster collaboration, and drive positive change across the APS. With each member's commitment to learning and growth, the CoP continues to serve as a beacon of excellence, inspiring a new generation of leaders and transforming the landscape of learning within the Australian Public Service.
