The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water has released three new learning modules to empower staff across the Commonwealth improve understanding of climate change, the risks and opportunities it presents. These modules are part of the recently released Climate Risk and Opportunity Management Program, which enables Commonwealth entities to assess, manage and disclose climate risks and opportunities within their organisation.
Module 1 ignites awareness about how our work and actions contribute to climate change, along with fundamental concepts such as climate modelling and what a changing climate means for our world and work in the APS.
Module 2 delves into different climate risks and opportunity principles which might be encountered in the public sector. Learners are challenged to consider how their programs, projects, and policies interact with climate risk and identify possible opportunities relating to their work. They will discover work done globally and nationally to manage risks and harness opportunities associated with climate change.
Module 3 is designed to be used while conducting a risk assessment. It steps through the process of using the newly released, Climate Risk Management – Organisation Application Guide to assess and manage climate risks and opportunities in the APS. It follows stories of individuals in the public sector as they complete each step of a climate risk and opportunity assessment.
Resources such as a step-by-step guide for climate risk assessments, templates and an in-depth technical guide are available on the DCCEEW website. Additionally, workshops taking users through each step of the assessment are provided by DCCEEW. To access previous workshop recordings or sign up for future sessions, contact the Climate Risk team and join the GovTeams Community of Practice.
