By the APS Academy Executive Programs and Leadership team
On 9 May, the APS Academy Executive Programs Team continued to share their passion for Learning and Development (L&D) for Senior Executive Service (SES) staff through the Academy Leadership Capability Connect (ALCC) 2.0 program. The ALCC is an event series that was created to assist L&D and SES unit employees develop their understanding and knowledge of the APS Academy and its Executive Programs offerings.
Kate Harris, Executive Programs and Leadership Craft Lead and participants.
The first event was a virtual one that provided attendees with insight into each of the programs on offer for SES. It included ‘live’ and ‘in-person’ testimonials from program alumni who spoke about the benefits of participating in professional development activities and what capabilities they have developed through Academy programs.
The second event was titled ALCC 2.0 – because let’s face it, anything good has a number behind it (hello iPhone!). This event was an ‘in-person’ delivery hosted at the Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD). Unlike the first ALCC event, this one highlighted Scholarships and Secondments. These programs include the Sir Roland Wilson Scholarship, Pat Turner and JAWUN and Margot McCarthy Scholarships.
To underscore the diversity and value of these programs, the Team hosted a panel discussion with Siddharth Shirodkar, Indigenous Business Australia, Kayannie Denigan, Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts and Mel Southwell-Lee, Department of Education. Many employees across the APS don’t even know these programs exist but as a result of ALCC 2.0, we are happy to say that all attendees at the event came away with a better understanding of what they are, and a definite interest in participating in the JAWUN program themselves one day.
But we didn’t stop there. Because these events are also about networking and building your contacts, the morning also included a group activity – pulled right out of the SES Band 1 program, followed by morning team and finishing up with a personalised tour of MoAD.

The Executive Programs Team is planning for the next event ALCC 3.0, which will be a virtual event held later this year. It is important that these events are accessible to everyone, so we will alternate between ‘in-person’ and online. The theme for ALCC 3.0 will be Integrity and how each of the Academy Executive programs builds this capability in the SES cohort.
If you have any questions about the ALCC event series or would like more information on our programs, please email the Team.
