A program for ethical, citizen-centric, adaptive leaders.

The SES Band 2 Leadership program strengthens the capability of senior executives to effectively perform a broad range of high-level responsibilities. Band 2 executives play a critical leadership role in shaping and implementing strategies, building a positive and high-performing workplace culture, and managing risks and opportunities of complex agency-wide and whole-of-government initiatives.

This program is convened and designed to address three priorities of the APS reform agenda:

  • Priority 1: An APS that embodies integrity in everything it does (ethics + integrity)
  • Priority 2: An APS that puts people and business at the centre of policy and services (citizen centred)
  • Priority 4: An APS that has the capability to do its job well (adaptive leadership)

This is a professional development opportunity that will help SES Band 2 leaders put community and citizens at the centre of policy and services, while navigating complexity through skilful engagement with stakeholders across jurisdictions and sectors. The program will strengthen leaders’ understanding of ethics and help them to foster a pro-integrity culture. Participants will gain deeper personal awareness and build peer networks across the APS.

This content has been provided by the APS Academy.

Participant benefits

  • Expand personal awareness and build valuable insights into leadership behaviour.
  • Appreciate, understand and apply ethical concepts in order to lead with integrity
  • Develop a deeper understanding of the perspectives and experiences of citizens and how to design and deliver programs that have citizens at the center.
  • Develop adaptive leadership skills to meet increasing expectations and scrutiny.
  • Apply leadership concepts to real situations and challenges.
  • Explore strategies and frameworks to recognise, evaluate and respond to complex strategic challenges.
  • Apply program learnings to effect meaningful system change in line with the APS reform program.
  • Build peer networks across the APS.

Considerations

This program has purposefully diverse cohorts (participants from a range of departments and agencies) to enrich learning outcomes with perspectives from across the APS. A limited number of participants from any single agency will be considered when forming a cohort. It will involve at least four days travel to regional Australia for a community immersion program.

The SES Band 2 Leadership program is a 6-month program and includes the following components:

  • Orientation (virtual session, 2.5-hours)
  • Pre-immersive (face-to-face workshop, MoAD in Canberra, 2 days)
  • Immersive (face-to-face workshop, venue outside the ACT, 4 days including the evening before)
  • Reconnect (face-to-face workshop, venue in the ACT, 2 days)
